#1. My Sassy Girl

Korean title: 엽기적인 그녀 (Yeopgijeogin Geunyeo)

Release date: 2001

This romantic comedy became a legend in 2001 in East Asia. If you haven’t watched it yet, it is definitely the movie you should pay close attention to. It was often called an East-Asian Titanic for it could perfectly touch the soul strings of everyone.

An engineering student meets a sassy girl and this couple appears at the center of their own love story. The twists and turns of the plot will make you laugh and cry, sympathize, and sometimes get shocked.

The “sassy girl” concept was something completely new for Asian cinematography that was familiar with more traditional female characters. The success was so tremendous, and the character was so much loved by people that the movie got a sequel in 2016 and several remakes. Of course, if you are a true cinema lover, start with the original movie, “My Sassy Girl”.

#2. Windstruck

Korean title: 내 여자친구를 소개합니다 (Nae yeojachingureul sogae habnid)

Release date: 2004

If you like The Sassy Girl, but want something closer to classic melodrama, Windstruck will be the right choice. The film tells the story of a strong and enthusiastic woman. Yeo Kyung-jin is the police officer who’s trying to catch a thief. However, by mistake (or maybe fortunately), she catches a physics teacher Go Myung-woo instead.

Go and Yeo fall in love, however, their feelings are challenged by the melodramatic events happening to them. The plot of the film shows Yeo as a more emotional girl and The Sassy Girl and brings you from comedy to a more serious scene of real life.

#3. My Girlfriend is an Agent

Korean title: 7급 공무원 (7keup kongmuwon)

Release date: 2009

If you like Hollywood’s Mr. & Mrs. Smith, My Girlfriend is an Agent is a nice Asian version of a similar film idea. Secret agents Ahn Soo-ji and Lee Jae-joon are engaged in a love-hate relationship (It’s a bit similar to what every couple faces in daily life, isn’t it?). They are both brave, cool, and strong secret agents who hide their identities from each other. Still keeping their secret lives, both of them, however, get assigned to stop Russian criminals from using a biological weapon in Korea. The couple tries to save the country by still hiding their secrets from each other.

#4. Your Name

Japanese title: 君の名は。(Kimi no Na wa)

Release date: 2016

Though the plot idea is quite simple, Your Name has become the 4th most popular movie in Japan. A girl from rural Japan becomes friends with a Tokyo guy. They develop a connection despite their space distance. But it’s not that simple. How do they get to know each other? In reality, they live in different times and exchange bodies by certain star magic. Though the movie is created as a popular Japanese cartoon (anime), it will be interesting to both kids and adults.

It shows the social realities of Japan and also describes the story of the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake and Tsunami. For the combination of touching drama and beautiful romance, Your Name deserves to get a spot on your must-watch list.

#5. Whisper of the Heart

Japanese title: 耳をすませば (Mimi o Sumaseba)|

Release date: 1995

Whisper of the Heart tells a moving story of young love. Shizuku, a beginner writer, and Seiji, a violin maker, meet each other after they find out that both of them like and look for the same library books. Their gentle and pure love starts to grow. What can you expect from the movie? Touching scenes of humanity, love for art, and the sense of sinless childhood and following your dreams.
